The White House Plumbers (White House Plumbers) is a 2023 American biographical comedy-drama film created by Alex Gregory and Peter Huick. The film premiered on the HBO Max movie platform on May 1, 2023.
The White House Plumbers is an HBO political dramedy miniseries that reimagines the Watergate scandal from a more unusual perspective—that of the White House „plumbers,“ the people hired to „fix“ leaks in the most extreme ways. The series skillfully balances historical accuracy with satirical tone.
The series follows the true story of E. Howard Hunt and G. Gordon Liddy, two former intelligence and law enforcement officers who were assigned to a special task force during the Richard Nixon administration to uncover and stop the leak of classified information following the publication of the Pentagon Papers, but this gradually draws them into one of the most ill-advised and illegal operations in U.S. political history.
As the miniseries progresses, the plot delves not only into the operations themselves—eavesdropping, infiltration, and conspiracies—but also into the personal relationships and psychological portraits of the participants. The plot reveals how the characters’ values of loyalty, power, and their own reality become increasingly blurred, as the consequences of their actions become historically catastrophic.
Director David Mandel approaches the material with a confidence that allows the series to be both dramatic and satirical. The pace is carefully measured — fast enough to keep the audience interested, but slow enough to allow nuances to develop. The atmosphere of the 1970s is recreated through detailed costumes, sets, and retro cinematography that place the viewer squarely in the era of political games and the shadows of power.
Woody Harrelson – as E. Howard Hunt. A strong and intense performance – he manages to portray the complexity of the character, torn between the idealism of the past and the realities of political compromise.
Justin Theroux – as G. Gordon Liddy. His character is both comic and tragic — stubborn, confident in his own rightness, and extremely devoted to his cause.
Lena Headey – as Dorothy Hunt. She presents the emotional side of the story — a woman trying to maintain family and morality amidst the growing chaos surrounding her husband.
Domhnall Gleeson – as John Dean. He brings intelligence and moral ambiguity to the series through his character, who is a key figure in the administration.
Kiernan Shipka – as Keven Hunt. Her character adds depth and human perspective, showing how the actions of adults affect the next generation.
Additional names participating include: Judy Greer, Kim Coates, Toby Huss, Liam James, Tony Plana, Yul Vazquez, Zoe Levine, Nelson Asensio, Alexis Valdes and others that complement the rich cast and diversity of characters in the story.
The White House Plumbers is a remarkable miniseries that combines political drama, historical fact, and dark humor to tell one of the most famous scandals in American history from an unusual perspective. Strong performances, a sharp script, and convincing direction make this series interesting for both history buffs and viewers looking for a quality drama with an intelligent approach.
