Ten years after the attack on Naboo, the Galactic Republic is facing the Separatist movement, and former Queen and current Senator Padmé Amidala (Natalie Portman) travels to Coruscant to vote on a bill to create an army to help the Jedi defend the Republic.
Upon arrival, she escapes an assassination attempt, and Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) and his student Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) are assigned to protect her. They pursue the shape-shifting Zam Wessell, but she is killed by a poison arrow before it is discovered who hired her. The Jedi Council tasks Obi-Wan Kenobi with finding out who tried to kill Amidala, and Anakin is tasked with protecting her on Naboo.
Obi-Wan discovers that the arrow is from the planet Kamino, where he heads. He finds a clone army that has been preparing for the Republic for years, and bounty hunter Jango Fett is the mastermind behind the clones and is subordinate to Count Dooku (Christopher Lee).
Meanwhile, Anakin and Amidala fall in love, and he has nightmares about his mother. They travel to his homeworld of Tatooine to see his mother, but discover that she has been kidnapped by kidnappers. Anakin finds his dying mother and slaughters everyone from the tribe that kidnapped her, including the women and children.
Obi-Wan follows Jango Fett to the planet Geonosis, where he discovers who is behind the Separatist movement. He sends his discovery to Anakin, unable to reach the Jedi Council. Who is the leader of the Separatist movement, and will Anakin be able to get Obi-Wan's message? How will the secret love between Anakin and Amidala develop?
