„Onslaught“" is an American action horror film with elements of science fiction, which marks the return of director Adam Wingard to his roots in genre cinema after working on the large-scale productions of the "„Godzilla vs. Kong“". The script was written by Adam Wingard and his longtime creative partner Simon Barrett, and the production is by A24 and Lyrical Media. The film will hit theaters in the United States on September 4, 2026, and will be distributed exclusively on the big screen by A24.
The story takes place in a desert area of the American South, where a group of genetically modified super soldiers escape from a top-secret military base. While special forces and mercenaries try to control the situation, a single mother - a former army sniper - turns out to be the only barrier between the monstrous threat and her own child. What begins as a desperate fight for survival gradually grows into a merciless battle against an enemy who seems almost impossible to stop. Without revealing its main surprises, the plot combines dynamic action, a horror atmosphere and science fiction ideas about the dangerous consequences of military experiments.
In the lead role Adria Arjona looks utterly convincing as a woman forced to use her military skills to protect her family. Next to her Dan Stevens plays the role of a mysterious German scientist, and Rebecca Hall, Michael Bean, Drew Starkey, Reginald Veljonson, Eric Wareheim and Alex Pereira form an impressive ensemble that combines well-known faces from horror, action and drama. Of particular interest is the participation of MMA champion Alex Pereira, for whom this is one of his first major film roles.
It seems that Adam Wingard is aiming for a film that combines uncompromising action with horror elements in the spirit of classic titles like "„The Aliens“" and "„The Terminator“". Rather than relying solely on spectacular effects, the director places the characters in a constant state of tension where any mistake could be fatal. The visual style is stark, filled with dusty desert landscapes, explosive gunfights, and brutal clashes that recall the early films of Wingard and Simon Barrett.
The first trailer was met with great interest among fans of the genre. Most often, the charismatic presence of Adria Arjona, the dynamic action scenes and the feeling that the director is returning to the darker and uncompromising style for which he has become known are highlighted. Many fans see in "„Onslaught“"a kind of spiritual successor to the cult"„The Guest“", although the creators emphasize that the two films are not directly related.
„Onslaught“" looks like a film that doesn't have the ambition to be a complex philosophical science fiction, but relies on pure adrenaline, tension and spectacular genre entertainment. If it manages to live up to expectations, this could become one of the strongest action horror offerings of 2026 and a convincing return for Adam Wingard to the style that initially made him so recognizable.
