Last Seen is a 2026 Australian drama thriller film directed by Christian Shvokhov from a screenplay by Chris Mrksa, adapted from the novel The Dispatcher by Ryan David Yang. The series premieres on September 9, 2026 on Apple TV.
Eleven years ago, little Maggie Ridley disappeared without a trace, and her father, Ian,'s life fell apart. Once a police detective, he now works as a dispatcher and still refuses to accept that his daughter might be dead. When he receives an urgent call from a teenage girl whose voice reminds him of Maggie, Ian clings to the possibility that she is alive and begins his own search. Determined to get to the truth at any cost, he gradually becomes entangled in a dangerous story that threatens to destroy what little is left of his family.
Christian Shvokhov builds the suspense gradually, placing personal drama at the center of the crime mystery. Rather than relying solely on unexpected twists and turns, the series follows how the ongoing uncertainty changes Ian’s behavior and his relationships with those around him. The action takes place in rural Victoria, Australia, whose harsh landscapes and remote settlements contribute to the feeling of isolation. Chris Mrksa’s adaptation retains the main plot of the novel, but develops it in a six-episode television format, allowing the connections between the disappearance and current events to gradually be revealed.
Patrick Brammell is convincing as Ian Ridley, a man whose determination to find his daughter gradually turns into a dangerous obsession. Maxine Peake builds Jenna Reed as a character with her own secrets and motives, and Brendan Cowell adds tension like Henry Reed. Daniel Henshall stands out as Donald Reed, while Jessica Uren, Chloe Jean Lourdes, Zara Newman and Tobias Muhafidin complement the family and investigative lines. The cast works best in the moments when the characters remain silent more than they say, and the viewer has to decide for themselves who they can trust.
Last Seen is a thriller about loss and hope, but also about the danger of allowing a painful mystery to consume one's entire life. Maggie's disappearance is the starting point, and gradually the story becomes an investigation into family secrets, guilt, and decisions whose consequences cannot be easily erased. The series maintains interest by gradually revealing information, rather than constantly relying on sensational twists.
For viewers who like dark crime dramas series with psychological depth, Last Seen offers a well-crafted mystery and a strong central character. The six episodes form a complete season in which Ian's personal story is no less important than the search for the truth about Maggie. The production is suitable for an audience that prefers the tension to build gradually and the characters to remain morally conflicted until the very end.
