Director Jake Szymanski uses a pseudo-documentary style that creates a sense of reality, similar to series like The office (2005 – 2013). The series' great strength is that it combines scripting with improvisation – the actors have to react in real time to Ronald's behavior without "breaking" the illusion. This makes each scene both controlled and unpredictable – a rare combination in television.
Ronald Gladden (himself) is the heart of the series – his naturalness and humanity make the experiment successful and emotionally impactful.
James Marsden plays a hyperbolized version of himself – a narcissistic and egocentric actor, which creates some of the funniest moments.
Alan Barinholtz and Susan Berger, along with the rest of the ensemble, build a convincing "reality" filled with eccentric but believable characters.
It is important to emphasize that the actors' task here is much more complex than the standard one – they must constantly improvise and maintain the illusion without error.
