Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built (Winchester) is a 2018 supernatural horror film with elements of biographical drama and fantasy, directed by Michael Spirig and Peter Spierig, who are also screenwriters along with Tom Vaughan. The world premiere is on February 2, 2018. The film is inspired by the story of Sarah Winchester, heiress of the famous weapons company, and the mysterious home that she turns into a maze of rooms, corridors, and enclosed spaces.
After the deaths of her husband and daughter, Sarah Winchester believes she is haunted by the ghosts of those who died from the weapons manufactured by the family company. To protect herself from them, she constantly expands her vast California mansion, with construction continuing around the clock. When psychiatrist Dr. Eric Price arrives at the invitation of the company's executives, his task is to assess the widow's mental state. He soon begins to doubt that Sarah's unusual behavior can have an explanation other than a mental disorder. In the labyrinth of the house, sinister secrets are gradually revealed, and some of the spirits seem determined to take revenge on the Winchester family.
Michael Spirig and Peter Spierig uses the unusual architecture of the mansion as a major source of tension. The narrow corridors, strange staircases and doors that lead nowhere create a sense of a trap from which the characters have difficulty escaping. The direction relies on a gloomy atmosphere, sudden appearances of ghosts and visual effects to maintain the fear of the unknown. Despite the interesting historical basis, the film often resorts to familiar techniques of the genre and does not fully exploit the potential of the mysterious story.
Helen Mirren builds the image of Sarah as a grieving woman whose strange behavior conceals a deep fear and unwavering belief in the supernatural. Jason Clarke plays Dr. Eric Price with the requisite dose of skepticism and inner tension as he gradually begins to question his own beliefs. Sarah Snook adds to the story as Marianne Marriott, Sarah's niece, who also finds herself drawn into the dangerous events. Angus Sampson, Laura Brent and Tyler Coppin enrich the secondary lines and help build the gloomy atmosphere in the mansion.
Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built offers a gothic tale in which grief, guilt, and fear are intertwined with supernatural threats. Its strongest quality is the mansion itself—an impressive and eerie space that becomes a full-fledged part of the narrative. At the same time, predictable scary moments and uneven plot development limit its impact. Among horror films inspired by real people and places, the production is suitable for viewers who appreciate dark settings and stories about haunted houses.
