The Rose Family War (The Roses) is a 2025 American comedy-drama film directed by Jay Roach from a screenplay by Warren Adler and Tony McNamara. The film is set to be released in the United States on August 29, 2025.
Ivy (Olivia Colman) and Theo (Benedict Cumberbatch) seem like the perfect couple: successful careers, a happy marriage, and beautiful children. But behind the facade of their idyllic life lies growing tension. When Theo loses his job as an architect and Ivy's career as a chef flourishes, the balance in their relationship is disrupted. Theo begins to feel overshadowed and useless, while Ivy revels in her newfound independence and success.
This leads to an escalating feud between the two, filled with manipulation, sabotage and emotional blows. Their home becomes a battlefield, where each side uses any means to prevail over the other. The film explores the fine line between love and hate, showing how a relationship can turn into a destructive war.
The film is a contemporary black comedy that reimagines the 1989 classic The Rose Family War, based on the novel by Warren Adler. Directed by Jay Roach and written by Tony McNamara, the film tells the story of seemingly ideal couple Ivy and Theo Rose, whose marriage crumbles under the pressure of professional ambitions and personal disappointments.
