The Chorale (2025)
The Chorale is a 2025 British musical romance film directed by Nicholas Hytner from a screenplay by Alan Bennett. The film is set to be released in the United Kingdom on 7 November 2025.
The film is set in 1916 in a small Yorkshire factory town and follows the attempts of the local singing society to survive after many of its members are mobilized for the First World War.
With most of the men leaving town, the directorate recruits teenage boys and girls to reinforce the choir. When a new choirmaster, Dr. Henry Guthrie (Ralph Fiennes), the local community begins to experience a mixture of hope, distrust, and a desire to continue through music.
Topics include: community cohesion, art reaction against the cruelty of war, intergenerational tensions, and the meaning of creativity as resistance.
Shot in the winter of 1916, the film uses an essential palette, cold rural landscapes, and layered editing to create an atmosphere of heaviness and anticipation. Mike Ely's camerawork builds intimacy and spatial silence, while George Fenton's musical accompaniment adds a melancholic yet vibrant touch to the vision.
Ralph Fiennes is the center of the story—a stern, charismatic, yet vulnerable leader. Strong support comes from Roger Allam, Mark Addy, Alan Armstrong, Robert Eames, and Simon Russell Beale—actors who build an authentically British ensemble with strong characters and emotional depth.
„The Chorale“" is set to be one of the most impressive British film titles of the year — a tribute to generations, music and spirit. It's a film about how a small community can rise through harmony when the world around them collapses.
