The Hangman (2024)

The Hangman is a 2024 American action horror thriller film directed by Bruce Wemple from a screenplay by Bruce Wemple and LeJohn Woods. The film is set to be released in the United States on May 31, 2024.

„The Hangman“" is a low-budget horror with elements of mystery and thriller that relies on classic motifs - an isolated location, a cult and supernatural evil. The film attempts to combine family drama with demonic horror, but the result is more uneven than truly impactful.

The story follows Leon, a man with a troubled past, who decides to mend his relationship with his son by taking a camping trip to a remote area of the Appalachian Mountains. What begins as an attempt at rapprochement quickly turns into a nightmare. It turns out that the area hides a dark secret - a local cult that has summoned a sinister creature known as "The Hangman." This is not just a myth, but a real threat that begins to leave a bloody trail in its wake. When Leon's son mysteriously disappears, the story turns into a desperate search filled with violence, fear and mounting tension. The protagonist is forced to confront both the cult and the creature itself, as the line between human evil and the supernatural gradually blurs.

Bruce Wemple's direction is typical of independent horror - focused on atmosphere and limited resources. The film uses the natural environment as a major source of tension, but often suffers from uneven pacing and a lack of a sufficiently built climax. However, there are moments when the tension works - especially in the scenes involving the mysterious presence of the creature.

Lejon Woods as Leon, the central figure in the film. He carries the emotional weight of the story and manages to convey the desperation of a father faced with an impossible situation.
Lindsay Dresbach appears in a supporting role that contributes to the development of the plot.
Mar Selous builds an image related to key moments in the story and the tension surrounding the main character.
Jefferson Cox and Richard Lonelo round out the cast with roles related to the mystery surrounding the cult.

„The Hangman“" is a film with an interesting idea but limited execution. It has potential – especially in the concept of a cult and ancient evil – but fails to fully develop it. It's a title that may appeal to fans of lower-budget horror, but is unlikely to leave a strong impression on a wider audience.
