Dark mirror (Look Away) is a 2018 Canadian fantasy horror film directed by Asaf Bernstein from a screenplay by Asaf Bernstein. The film was released in Canada on October 13, 2018.
The film blends classic themes of split personality and alienation with a visually stylish and cold aesthetic approach. It is a story of identity, self-awareness, and the dangerous power of repressed emotions—at once an intimate drama and a tense psychological thriller.
The main character is Maria Brewer (in the role of India Eisley) is a shy, introverted high school student who lives in the shadow of her parents. Her father, a famous plastic surgeon (Jason Isaacs), is cold and controlling, and her mother (Mira Sorvino) suffers from depression and withdraws from reality. At school, Maria is the target of ridicule, and her only closeness is with her best friend's boyfriend - which only increases her feelings of guilt and loneliness.
One day, while standing in front of the mirror, her reflection—at first glance identical, but with a different expression—begins to speak to her. This „alternate self“ introduces herself as Airi—her bold, liberated, and aggressive counterpart. Gradually, Airi takes control of Maria’s life, replacing insecurity with cruelty and submission. Where Maria would retreat, Airi strikes. Where Maria would cry, Airi takes revenge. The film gradually shifts from a psychological drama to a full-blown nightmare, in which it is no longer clear which of the two is the real one.
„Dark mirror“" is a film that begins as a teen drama but ends as a psychological nightmare in the style of Black Swan and Carrie. Bernstein doesn't seek cheap scares, but psychological tension generated by the internal battle between weakness and aggression. The film is visually sophisticated, impressive in its acting, and thematically dense — it explores what happens when a mirror stops reflecting and starts living.
For viewers expecting standard horror, this will be a slow and strange experience. But for those looking for symbolism, atmosphere, and a cold aesthetic, "„Dark mirror“" is one of the most underrated psychological works of the last decade.
