„The King of New York“ („King of New York“") is a 1990 American-Italian crime drama film directed by Abel Ferrara according to the scenario of Nicholas St. John. The film was released in the United States on September 28, 1990, and has a running time of 103 minutes. The production was financed by the Italian companies Reteitalia and Scena International, and the American distribution was associated with Carolco Pictures and New Line Cinema.

The story centers on Frank White, a powerful drug lord who is released from prison and returns to the streets of New York with the ambition to rebuild his empire. His unusual goal is to use some of the money he earned from his crimes to help the poor and save a hospital in the Bronx. It is this contradiction between the ruthless criminal and the self-proclaimed benefactor that makes the film much more than just a gangster story.

Plot

After his release, Frank White finds the New York underworld changed and control of its territories has passed to other groups. He gathers his old allies and begins to methodically regain his influence, not hesitating to use violence against his competitors. At the same time, White tries to turn the huge profits from drugs into a means to achieve an almost utopian personal goal.

But he is confronted by both rival criminals and police officers, who are gradually forced to cross their own moral boundaries. The detectives' investigation becomes a parallel story about power, corruption and the line between law and crime. It gradually becomes clear that in Frank White's world, no one can remain completely clean.

Directing

Abel Ferrara creates a dark and stylish neon noir in which New York is almost an equal participant in the story. The night streets, neon lights, clubs and dirty urban spaces create an atmosphere of constant threat. Rather than romanticizing the criminal world, the director shows it as an environment in which power inevitably leads to violence and moral decay.

This approach was particularly important for Ferrara's development as an author and paved the way for "„The Bad Lieutenant“" and "„Body grabbers“", which he directed in the following years. In "„The King of New York“" his interest in characters on the border between morality and complete depravity is already clearly visible. It is this consistency that makes his crime novels movies since the early 90s into a recognizable part of independent American cinema.

Acting

Christopher Walken He delivers one of the most memorable roles of his career as Frank White. With his characteristic coldness and strange charisma, he transforms the character into a man who can be both a ruthless killer and a convinced idealist. It is this duality that makes the character so interesting and does not allow the viewer to easily define him as a traditional villain.

Laurence Fishburne and David Caruso are among the strongest supporting figures, with the former playing White's loyalist Jimmy Jump and the latter playing Detective Gilly. The cast also includes Wesley Snipes, Victor Argo, Giancarlo Esposito and Steve Buscemi, which give additional energy to the criminal world. It is especially curious that Steve Buscemi and Laurence Fishburne later they became established names with numerous famous roles, but here they are still part of the raw atmosphere of independent cinema.

Conclusion

„The King of New York“" is a dark, stylish and provocative crime film that does not particularly care about the traditional division between good and bad. Its strongest point is the contradictory image of Frank White, whose philosophy transforms crime into both a means of power and an instrument of charity. Ferrara does not excuse his character, but neither does he reduce him to a one-layered villain.

Today the production is seen as one of the most significant early works of Abel Ferrara and as an important part of his series of dark stories of crime, guilt and moral decay. In the context of "„The Bad Lieutenant“" and "„Body grabbers“" the film shows how consistently the director develops his characteristic visual and thematic style. For fans of neon noir and crime movies from the 90s "„The King of New York“" remains a mandatory title.
