Hannibal (Hannibal() is a 2001 American psychological horror thriller film directed by Ridley Scott from a screenplay by David Mamet and Stephen Zaillian. It was released in the United States on February 9, 2001. The film is a sequel to The Silence of the Lambs and once again places Dr. Hannibal Lecter at the center of the story.

After years of hiding in Europe, Hannibal Lecter is once again at the mercy of the FBI, and Agent Clarice Starling is drawn into the hunt for him. Meanwhile, Lecter is also being pursued by Mason Verger, one of the few survivors of his encounter with him and a man obsessed with revenge. The story unfolds between the United States and Italy, gradually pitting the three in a dangerous game of pursuit and manipulation.

Ridley Scott gives the Hannibal a very different visual atmosphere from The Silence of the Lambs. The film is more stylized, lavish, and downright brutal, with Italian locations and Hans Zimmer's score adding to its distinctive feel. Scott relies more on visual suggestion and shock value than realistic psychological thriller, making the film both impressive and far more extreme than its predecessor.

Anthony Hopkins is once again magnificent as Hannibal Lecter and transforms the character into both a highly intelligent and terrifying presence. Julianne Moore takes over the role of Clarice Starling from Jodie Foster and builds a different version of the character, while Gary Oldman is almost unrecognizable as the disfigured and hate-filled Mason Verger. Ray Liotta and Giancarlo Giannini also contribute to the strong ensemble.

Hannibal is bloodier and more visually flamboyant than The Silence of the Lambs, but that's what makes it a different film, not just a repeat of the formula. The plot doesn't quite reach the same psychological precision as the 1991 classic, but Hopkins, the atmosphere, and Ridley Scott's work remain strong enough to make the production memorable. For fans of dark crime films and serial killer stories Hannibal is a significant sequel to one of the most popular horror series.
