The birth of the dragon (Birth of the Dragon) is a 2016 American biographical action film directed by George Nolfi from a screenplay by Stephen J. Rivell, Christopher Wilkinson, and Michael J. Dorgan. The film was released in the United States on August 25, 2017.
„The birth of the dragon“" is a film that attempts to build a mythology around the early years of Bruce Lee, but does so through a highly stylized, almost legendary perspective, rather than as a factual biography. The story is inspired by the infamous and still poorly documented duel between Bruce Lee and Shaolin kung fu master Wong Jack-man, an event that is still shrouded in controversy, rumors, and different stories to this day.
The film uses this real-life conflict as its basis, but the narrative is retold through the eyes of a young American placed at the center of the story, which gives it a broader dramatic framework and at the same time distances the work from the classic biography. The film is distinguished by dynamic fight scenes, excellently shot, with a strong focus on the stylistics of classic kung fu films from the 70s.
Philip Angie as Bruce Lee, he convincingly recreates some of his mannerisms, although his character is more self-centered than fans expect. He does not strive to be a carbon copy of him, but rather builds an image inspired by the legend, but consistent with the dramatic framework of the film. This makes the character a little more arrogant and less philosophical than Bruce Lee is historically known for.
Billy Magnussen adds an emotional center to the story, although its presence shifts the focus away from the main conflict.
Xia Yu In the role of Wong, Jack-man brings weight, spirituality, and quiet strength—his character is quiet, disciplined, and deeply internally motivated, creating a strong counterpoint to Lee.
Criticism of the film comes mainly due to its deviation from real facts, the focus on the fictional student instead of the real conflict between Lee and Jackman, and the superficial character development.
However, the film works well as an entertaining kung fu spectacle in which philosophy, honor, and martial arts intertwine in a spectacular clash.
„"„The birth of the dragon“" is aesthetically stylish and well-choreographed, but weak as a biopic. It is strong as a pure martial arts action film. This is a film that should not be seen as a historical document, but as a stylized legend - almost a myth. It offers a visual feast for martial arts fans and deeply explores the idea of a clash of generations and philosophies. While it does not offer the most accurate or faithful portrayal of Bruce Lee, the film remains a curious, attractive and well-made look at the mythology that continues to accumulate around the legendary master.
