New Wave is a 2025 French comedy film directed by Richard Linklater from a screenplay by Holly Gent, Letitia Mason, and Vincent Palmo Jr. The film premiered in France on October 8, 2025.
The film pays homage to the French New Wave and Jean-Luc Godard in particular, tracing the creation of the iconic 1960 film À bout de souffle, presenting the process of its filming and the interactions between the key figures of that time.
The story is set in the late 1950s, when a young Jean-Luc Godard, supported by François Truffaut and Claude Chabrol, is striving to make his first feature film. The film depicts the dynamic between Godard and actors Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg, as well as the challenges he faces during production. Nouvelle Vague is shot in black and white and uses stylistic elements characteristic of the original film, such as jump cuts and unconventional camera angles.
The film was presented in the main competition program of the 2025 Cannes Film Festival and received positive reviews for its nostalgic atmosphere and respect for film history.
