Washington Black (2025 – )

Washington Black is a 2025 American historical drama television series created by Selwyn Seifu Hinds and based on the novel of the same name by Esi Edugian. The film premiered on the Hulu movie platform on July 23, 2025.

The film is set in the early 19th century and follows the fate of George Washington "Wash" Black, a young slave on a plantation in Barbados, who, after a tragedy, escapes in an airplane invented by his owner's brother. His journey takes him to Nova Scotia, where he meets a variety of people, revealing themes of freedom, identity, racial and social boundaries.

The series impresses with its rich cinematography: contrasting landscapes between the Caribbean and the Canadian countryside, detailed costumes and a global atmosphere that reflects the transition from slavery to social order. The dramaturgy is provocative and includes parallel timelines, drawing on themes such as identity and belonging.

Washington Black is a powerful adaptation that combines a journey told through the personal story of a character, a colorful historical setting, and an inky social drama. It is recommended for viewers looking for inspiring and emotionally charged historical narratives.
