Matlock is a 2024 American crime drama television series created by Jenny Snyder Urman. The film is set to premiere on movie platforms on September 22, 2024.
The film is another TV remake of the 80s classic starring Andy Griffith, but this time with a new twist: Madeline "Matty" Matlock, a widow and former assault lawyer, returns after a 30-year hiatus to investigate her law firm's possible role in her daughter's death from opioid addiction. The series was developed by Jenny Snyder Urman, known for the success of "„Jane the Virgin”.
Katie Bates plays Matty Matlock – living proof that a mature actress can carry and lead a series, earning praise for her light yet insightful adaptation of the iconic character. The supporting cast includes Jason Ritter, Skye P. Marshall, David Del Rio, Lee Lewis – each bringing a freshness and complimenting Matty’s sophistication.
Harmoniously intertwining a "case from an episode" with family intrigue, Matty reveals dark passions and corruption in her legal environment, without unnecessary melodrama, but with clear moral depth - she uses her age and public misunderstanding to expose and save.
The production is a classic CBS spectacle—skillfully balanced, with warm palettes and a moderate, „comfortable“ pace. In season 1, the text serves as a social commentary on the opioid epidemic and the abuse of power. While it sometimes feels formulaic and procedural, the formula works flawlessly.
„"„Matlock“" (2024) manages to transform a classic through new perspectives – female logic, social engagement and coming-of-age drama, without losing its spectacularity and accessibility. The series impresses with a fresh vision, social warmth and genuine human resonance, making it a worthy title of 2024–25.
