„Truth or Dare“ (Truth or Dare) is an American supernatural horror film that turns one of the most popular teenage games into a deadly nightmare. The film is directed by Jeff Wadlow, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Christopher Roach, Gillian Jacobs, and Michael Reiss. The film is produced by Blumhouse Productions and Universal Pictures, and was released in theaters in the United States on April 13, 2018. Despite mixed critical reviews, the film became a solid commercial success, grossing over $95 million on a budget of around $3.5 million.
The story begins during a vacation in Mexico, where a group of college students meet a mysterious stranger who convinces them to play one last game of Truth or Dare in an abandoned church. Soon after returning home, the friends realize that the game is not over. An unseen supernatural force continues to ask them questions and test them, and their refusal to tell the truth or fulfill the challenge leads to fatal consequences. As the number of victims grows, the heroes are forced to discover the origin of the curse and find a way to break it before the game reaches its inevitable end.
In the lead role Lucy Hale does a convincing job as Olivia, a young woman who gradually realizes that friendship, trust, and moral compromise can be just as dangerous as supernatural evil itself. Next to her Tyler Posey, Violet Bean, Hayden Seto, Nolan Gerard Funk, Sofia Ali and Landon Liboiron build a diverse group of characters whose secrets and relationships gradually come to light. Although the characters follow familiar patterns from teen horror, the cast manages to bring enough emotion to keep the story interesting.
The strongest side of "„Truth or Dare“" is the original idea of turning a harmless children's game into a means of psychological and physical terror. Jeff Wadlow builds tension through the constant feeling that no one is safe, and the characteristic unnaturally stretched smiles of the possessed characters become one of the most recognizable visual features of the film. Although it uses traditional techniques of the genre such as sudden startling moments and a supernatural curse, the production is distinguished by a dynamic pace and clear rules that maintain tension until the very end.
Upon its release, the film received mostly negative reviews from critics, who criticized the predictable script and underdeveloped characters. On the other hand, audiences, especially fans of Blumhouse horror films, received the production much more favorably. The idea behind the plot, the tense pace, and the effective use of the low budget made "„Truth or Dare“" into one of the studio's financial successes and prove once again that an original concept is often enough to attract an audience.
„Truth or Dare“" doesn't change the rules of the horror genre, but it offers a fun, tense and easy-to-watch film that successfully combines supernatural elements with teenage drama. While it doesn't reach the level of Blumhouse's best productions, it remains an enjoyable genre entertainment that turns a simple game into a real test of survival.
