Tornado is a 2025 British action thriller film directed by John McLean from a screenplay by John McLean and Kate Lees. The film is set to be released in the United Kingdom on 26 February 2025.
Tornado is an original and visually stunning period action thriller directed by John McLean. Made on a minimalist budget, the film combines elements of samurai cinema and Western style, set in the harsh and windswept Scottish Highlands of the 1790s.
Tornado, a young Japanese woman trained by her father, a former samurai and traveling puppeteer, magically finds herself on the coast of Scotland. She is quickly drawn into a gunfight after gold is stolen by a local gang led by the ruthless Sugarman (Tim Roth) and his son Little Sugar (Jack LoudonAfter her father is murdered, Tornado embarks on a lonely quest for revenge – armed with puppet swords and samurai art.
With cinematographer Robbie Ryan, the film impresses with a „sharp as a sword“ visual language – windswept landscapes, somber colors and carefully selected shots that combine cinematic lyricism and tension. An aesthetic that in itself tells the story of character and nature. Jed Kurzel’s spectacular music supports the atmosphere emotionally and rhythmically – especially at key moments.
Tornado is a bold artistic experiment – visually powerful, stylistically distinct and emotionally raw. While not without its weaknesses, the film offers a unique cinematic experience – a „spectacle in the wind“ with an exotic samurai mission in the harsh British soil. If you are willing to take the risk for an unconventional narrative, Tornado is worth your attention.
