Young FBI agent Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) is assigned to help find a missing woman in order to save her from a psychopathic serial killer who is skinning his victims. Clarice attempts to gain a better understanding of the killer's twisted mind by talking to another psychopath, Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins), who was once a respected psychiatrist.

FBI agent Jack Crawford believes that cunning mind-manipulator Lecter knows the answers to their questions and can help them find the killer. However, to get any information from the prisoner, Clarice must first gain Lecter's trust.
