The Knife

The knife (The Knife) is a 2024 American drama thriller film directed by Nnamdi Asomugha from a screenplay by Mark Duplass and Nnamdi Asomugha. The film is set to be released in the United States on August 15, 2025.

The knife is a psychological drama thriller film that marks the directorial debut of Nnamdi Asomugha, an actor, screenwriter, and producer who The knife also gets behind the camera. The script was co-written with Mark Duplass, and the film is notable for its tense, one-night stand and social depth surrounding a normal family situation that quickly turns into a nightmare.

The story takes place almost entirely over the course of a single night and focuses on Chris, a family man who, along with his wife Alex and their two young daughters, is enjoying a quiet family life in their new home. Everything changes when a mysterious woman appears at their house at night and is later found unconscious with a knife next to her.

The family is shocked by the situation and cannot explain whether Chris hit the woman by mistake or if he found her that way - which sets off a chain reaction of fear, doubt and suspicion of guilt. A process of unraveling the truth begins, in which the family and the authorities (represented by Detective Carlsen) try to understand what really happened, the balance between honesty and survival, and the consequences of the choices everyone makes in extreme circumstances.

Nnamdi Asomugha builds The knife with a concentrated, intimate style that brings the viewer closer to the emotional reactions of the characters, almost like a theatrical thriller. The camera stays close to the characters' faces and decisions, and the theme of family security is put under sharp question when confronted with the strangeness and unforeseen consequences of the appearance of the stranger. The plot is less horror and more a psychological study of human reactions, where the tension comes from the decisions and moral dilemmas, rather than from external threats.

The main roles are played by a really strong acting ensemble, which contributes to the emotional and tense nature of the story:

Nnamdi Asomugha as Chris – a father and husband faced with a real moral challenge.
Aja Naomi King as Alex – Chris's wife, who, together with him, must balance between truth and protecting the family.
Melissa Leo as Detective Carlsen - an experienced investigator who investigates the case and tries to discover the "real" truth.
Manny Jacinto as Officer Padilla – part of the police line, which adds an extra layer of pressure.
Amari Alexis Price and Aiden Gabriel Price like their two daughters – whose innocence and safety become central to the family.
Shannon Corboil (Snell) and Lucinda Jenny (Mary) complete the picture of public and police presence.

The knife made its world debut at the Tribeca Film Festival in June 2024, where it won awards for Best New Director and Best Cinematography, as well as nominations for Best Feature Film, underscoring the strength of Asomugha's first film behind the camera.

Critics noted that the film is an engaging and psychologically tense work that skillfully combines family drama with thriller elements, although some found it predictable in its construction, yet strong in its emotional impact.

The knife is a compact yet powerful psychological thriller that examines how an unexpected, one-night stand can question everything a family believes about themselves and the world. The film works as both a suspenseful mystery story and a social commentary on truth, fear, and the consequences of the choices we make.
