The uninvited guest (The Invisible Guest; orig. title: Counter-time) is a 2016 Spanish crime thriller-mystery film directed by Oriol Paulo from a screenplay by Oriol Paulo and Lara Sendim. The film premiered in Spain on January 6, 2016.
Adrian Doria (Mario Casas), a young and successful businessman, wakes up in a hotel room next to the body of his murdered lover, Laura Vidal (Barbara Lenny). The door is locked from the inside, there is no sign of forced entry, and all the evidence points to him. To prove his innocence, Adrian hires the famous lawyer Virginia Goodman (Anna Wagener), which gives him only a few hours to build an impenetrable defense.
The film unfolds like a psychological game of cat and mouse – between lawyer and client, between truth and lies. Gradually, new versions of the murder emerge, unexpected revelations and shocking twists and turns, leading to a completely surprising ending.
Oriol Paulo uses a clean aesthetic, muted colors, and confined spaces to emphasize the tension and claustrophobic atmosphere. The direction is carefully structured – each scene is like a piece of a puzzle that the viewer puts together with the characters. The music and editing create the feeling of a race against time.
„The uninvited guest“" is an example of a modern European thriller that is not inferior to Hollywood productions. It is an intelligently filmed mystery about guilt, manipulation and hidden truths. The ending of the film is one of those that leaves the viewer speechless and makes him rethink everything he has seen so far.
