The rest (The Holdovers) is a 2023 American comedy-drama film directed by Alexander Payne from a screenplay by David Hemmingson. The film is set to be released in the United States on August 31, 2023.
Nobody Likes Teacher Paul Hunnam (Paul Giamatti) – not his students, not his faculty colleagues, not even the principal, because everyone finds his pomp and rigidity irritating. Without a family and no place to spend the Christmas holidays of 1970, Paul stays at school to supervise the students who cannot go home.
After a few days, only one of the students remains – a troublemaking 18-year-old named Angus (Dominic Sessa) – a good student whose bad behavior always puts him in danger of expulsion. Joining Paul and Angus is the head chef Mary (Da'vin Joy Randolph) – an African-American woman who cares for privileged sons and whose own son she recently lost in Vietnam.
These three very different castaways form an unlikely Christmas family, sharing comical mishaps over two very snowy weeks in New England. A true journey of how they help each other realize they are not prisoners of their past and can shape their future.
