Recollection (2025)
Recollection is a 2025 American fantasy action thriller film directed by Kayden Butera from a screenplay by Kayden Butera and Rylan Butera. The film is set to be released in the United States on March 7, 2025.
Recollection is a science fiction thriller with a mysterious and philosophical charge. The film relies on the well-known, but always provocative idea - what would happen if we could erase our painful memories. This is not just sci-fi with futuristic technology, but an attempt to explore the human psyche, guilt and the cost of "convenient forgetting".
The action takes place in the near future, where technology exists that allows people to erase traumatic memories from their minds. For many, this is salvation – a chance to start over, without the burden of the past. The main character, Kate, is one of those people. But when an unexpected technical glitch restores her erased memories, she is confronted with a terrifying truth – not only about her own past, but also about the system that was supposed to help her. As the story progresses, the film gradually unfolds a web of secrets, manipulations and moral dilemmas. The question is no longer whether memories should be forgotten, but who has the right to decide this.
Cayden Butera takes a relatively minimalist, yet atmospheric approach. The focus is on the idea, not the spectacle – the visual style is more functional than impressive. The direction tries to create a sense of paranoia and uncertainty, often putting the viewer in the position of the heroine – confused, doubting and gradually revealing the truth. Although the concept is strong, critics note that the messages are sometimes too direct, and the dialogue – not always natural enough.
Roslyn Luke (Kate) – carries the film with an emotional and sincere performance; convincing as a woman torn between oblivion and truth.
Falk Henschel (Teddy) – intense and dramatic, his character adds moral weight and personal motivation to the story.
Eric Roberts (Sid Dayas) – charismatic and slightly sinister, giving a touch of ambiguity and corruption.
Gary Graham (Del) – in one of his last roles, he brings calm and philosophical depth.
Cesar Garcia – complements the ensemble with a more earthy and human element.
The actors generally manage to lend weight to an otherwise conceptual script.
Recollection is a film that raises more questions than it answers – and that is its strength. It is a sci-fi that relies less on effects and more on ideas: about memory, identity and the price of truth. Despite some weaknesses in the dialogue and rhythm, the film remains interesting and provocative. It is suitable for viewers who are looking for not just tension, but a concept to think about after the end credits.
