Marmalade (2024)

Marmalade

Marmalade (Marmalade) is a 2024 British crime comedy romantic thriller film directed by Keir O'Donnell from a screenplay by Keir O'Donnell. The film is set to be released on movie platforms on 9 February 2024.

„Marmalade“" is an unconventional crime-romance film that skillfully mixes genres - from a noir thriller to an almost surreal love story. This is a debut directorial project that from the very beginning shows a desire to escape from clichés. The film is often described as "different" - not because it reinvents the genre, but because it constantly changes its direction and plays with audience expectations.

The story begins in prison, where the young and naive Baron befriends his cellmate - the experienced escapee Otis. To convince him to help him escape, Baron begins to tell his story - about his love for the mysterious Marmalade and about the bank robbery that brought them here. Through flashbacks, the viewer follows how a seemingly romantic relationship gradually turns into a risky crime, motivated by desperation and a desire for a better life. But this is not just a story about a robbery. The film constantly changes perspective - what seems clear at first gradually blurs, and the truth turns out to be much more complicated.

Keir O'Donnell approaches the film with a playful and experimental style. The direction often resembles a mix of classic noir films and more colorful, almost comic book visual solutions. The film uses bright colors, unconventional editing, and narrative twists to keep the viewer in suspense. It is this unpredictability that is its greatest strength - the story literally "zigzags" instead of following a standard structure. At the same time, this style may seem too eccentric for some viewers, especially if they are looking for a more classic crime film.

Joe Keery (Baron) – an extremely interesting choice for the lead role; he builds a character who seems naive, but hides more than he shows.
Camila Morone (Marmalade) – charismatic and unpredictable; a typical "fatal" image, but with a modern look.
Aldis Hodge (Otis) – stable and charismatic; serves as a counterpoint to Baron and the driving force of the prison line.
The chemistry between the actors is key – it is what makes the story both funny and tense.

„Marmalade“" is a film that is best viewed without any preconceived notions. It starts out as a romantic crime story, but gradually evolves into something much more complex and playful. It is not a film for everyone - its eccentric style and constant twists and turns may divide opinions. But for viewers looking for something different, unpredictable and slightly provocative, "„Marmalade“" offers exactly that - an experience that doesn't sit still within the genre.
