Love. Lies. Blood. is a 2024 American-British romantic crime thriller film directed by Rose Glass from a screenplay by Rose Glass and Veronika Tofilska. It is set to premiere in the United States on March 8, 2024, and will be released in wide release on March 15, 2024.
Plot
Lou runs a small gym in New Mexico and leads a relatively secluded life when he meets Jackie, an aspiring bodybuilder who is traveling to Las Vegas to compete. The two quickly develop a strong attraction and their relationship becomes a major part of the story. However, their love draws them into the violence and criminal world associated with Lou's family.
Lou's father, Lou Senior, is a wealthy and influential man with a criminal past, and his relationship with his daughter is far from a normal family closeness. Jackie gradually finds herself drawn into the dangerous consequences of the relationship between Lou and her family. Thus, the romantic story collides with crime, jealousy and a cover-up of violence, turning the personal conflict into a much more dangerous situation.
Directing
About Rose Glass Love. Lies. Blood. is the second feature film after Holy Maud, which brought her international attention. Here the director once again works with a tense psychological environment, but expands the scope, combining romance, crime drama and highly stylized violence. The film is produced by A24 and Film4, with participation from Escape Plan Productions and Lobo Films.
The visual style is an important part of the impact, with the small gym, the American countryside and the surrounding spaces becoming natural settings for the increasingly tense story. Rose Glass does not aim for a realistic crime drama in the traditional sense, but rather builds an exaggerated and almost surreal world. This allows the film to shift sharply between intimacy, dark humor and brutality.
Acting
Kristen Stewart builds Lou as a closed and contradictory woman whose life changes after Jackie appears. Next to her Kathy O'Brien is physically and dramatically convincing as the ambitious bodybuilder whose goal is tied not only to love but also to her own professional aspirations. The chemistry between the two actresses is key to their relationship remaining emotionally compelling even as the story becomes increasingly extreme.
Ed Harris In the role of Lou Senior, he brings the necessary sense of power and menace without the character becoming a simple criminal villain. Dave Franco, Jena Malone and Anna Baryshnikov complete the main cast and participate in the family and personal conflicts surrounding Lou. The acting ensemble works well in the production's style, where exaggeration is part of the narrative itself.
Conclusion
Love. Lies. Blood. begins as an unusual love story between two women, but gradually develops into a dark crime thriller about obsession, family, and the consequences of violence. The film uses romance as the driving force of the story, without separating it from the other conflicts. Thus, the relationship between Lou and Jackie remains central even as the criminal side of the story takes on more and more space.
The combination of strong performances, distinctive visual style and unusual mixing of genres makes Love. Lies. Blood. A different proposition among contemporary films. Rose Glass demonstrates a confident directorial style, and Kristen Stewart and Kathy O'Brien carry the main emotional weight of the story. The result is a dark, provocative and deliberately exaggerated thriller that uses love as a starting point for a much more dangerous confrontation.
