Believer (2018)

Believer (original title: Dokjeon) is a 2018 South Korean crime action thriller film directed by Lee Hae-young from a screenplay by Jung Seo-kyang. The film premiered in South Korea on May 24, 2018.

The film is a remake of Johnny To's popular Hong Kong film Drug War. However, it is not a mere copy – Believer is a work in its own right, deeply rooted in the Korean cinematic style: dark, suspenseful, morally ambiguous and visually impactful.

The story revolves around a relentless war between the Korean police and a mysterious drug cartel led by an elusive boss known only as "Mr. Lee." The protagonist, Detective Won Ho, is obsessed with discovering the leader's identity and bringing down the criminal organization. In his attempts to reach the top of the hierarchy, he collaborates with Rak, a survivor of a drug lab explosion who claims to be connected to the cartel.

The plot is full of twists, suspense, and double entendres. The mystery surrounding Mr. Lee's identity drives the narrative, with the script masterfully maintaining doubt even in the characters themselves - who is telling the truth and who is just a pawn?

At first glance, this is a crime thriller about drugs and pursuits. But beneath the surface lies a meditation on identity, moral ambivalence, and the hypocrisy of the system. Detective Won Ho is faced with ethical choices that blur the line between legality and criminality. Rak is an enigmatic character - vulnerable and manipulative, he questions the motives of everyone around him.

Believer is more than just a thriller. It is a tense and intelligent film that explores what it means to pursue justice in a world where truth is multi-layered and trust is a deadly weapon. The film maintains a high level of suspense until the very last frame, leaving the viewer to ponder who the believer really is—and what he believes.
