Kodachrome (Kodachrome) is a 2017 American drama film directed by Mark Russo from a screenplay by Jonathan Tropper. The film premiered on Netflix on April 20, 2018.
„Kodachrome“" is both a travelogue and an emotional family drama that tells the final days of legendary photographer Ben Ryder and his estranged son Matt, who works as a music manager.
When Matt learns that his father is seriously ill and has only weeks to live, the two embark on a journey to the only remaining lab in Kansas that still develops old film. Kodachrome. Ben wants to develop his last photos—probably the most important of his life.
This trip becomes an occasion:
- to face unspoken insults
- to revisit the missed years
- to discover if there is still a chance for forgiveness
- to learn more about who they really are to each other
Jason Sudeikis surprises with dramatic depth — his Matt is a man trapped between resentment, loneliness, and an unspoken need for love.
Ed Harris is magnificent as Ben—sarcastic yet charming, painfully honest, and touchingly vulnerable.
Elizabeth Olsen brings calm, humanity, and warmth to the role of nurse Zoe, who accompanies the two and serves as an emotional bridge between them.
The film is shot with a specific visual aesthetic – warm colors, reminiscent of the color palette of the film strip; careful cinematography, emphasizing landscapes, faces and the silence between words; a smooth pace that gives the viewer time to „breathe“ with the characters. The music is minimalist, with an emphasis on melancholy and American folk elements.
„Kodachrome“" is a beautiful, warm and sincere film about art, memory and second chances. A gentle, human cinema that speaks of forgiveness without unnecessary melodrama and offers some of the best dramatic roles from Sudeikis and Harris.
