The film is set in Gotham City in 1981, where a comedian is rejected by the society he lives in. His failure drives him crazy and he becomes a psychopathic criminal who turns the lives of the citizens into an endless criminal chaos.
The film's script was inspired by Martin Scorsese films, such as "Taxi Driver" and "„The King of Comedy„", as well as from Alan Moore's graphic novel "„Batman: The Killing Joke„".
In September 2017, Warner Bros.. Leonardo DiCaprio was considered to play the role of the Joker, but in February 2018, Joaquin Phoenix was cast by director Todd Phillips for the role. Upon learning of the news, Phoenix said he was very excited about the news because it was the film he had wanted to be in, describing it as unique and atypical.
