„Smotanyaczi“ („Hot Shots!“") from 1991 is one of the most successful parody comedies of the early 90s. Directed by Jim Abrahams, one of the creators of the cult "„Is there a pilot on the plane?“", the film mostly mocks 1980s military action films, and in particular the "„Top Gun“", but also includes references to dozens of other popular productions. The result is an insanely funny comedy, filled with absurd situations, visual gags and jokes that are poured on the viewer at an almost non-stop pace.
The story revolves around pilot Topper Harley, an extremely talented aviator who lives in voluntary isolation after tragic events in his past. Despite possessing extraordinary abilities, he has left the military and tries to stay away from anything related to flying.
His quiet life is disrupted when the US military calls him back into service for a top-secret operation. Topper is sent to an elite squadron of pilots, where he must work with a group of eccentric colleagues and prepare for a dangerous mission. At the same time, a romantic story begins between him and the beautiful psychologist at the base, which further complicates his life.
Without revealing any major plot twists, the film uses this relatively simple story as a pretext for a continuous series of parodies. Almost every scene contains a reference to a famous film, TV series, or pop culture phenomenon. The humor ranges from clever visual nods to completely absurd situations that defy all logic, but that is part of the production's charm.
The director Jim Abrahams demonstrates an excellent understanding of the parody genre. Rather than simply satirizing specific films, he uses well-known clichés as the basis for his own comedic universe. The pace is extremely fast, and often one joke follows another before the viewer has finished laughing at the previous one.
As Topper Harley Charlie Sheen gives one of the most memorable performances of his career. He parodies the typical action hero with a deadpan expression and an impressive sense of self-irony. By then, Sheen was already known for his war dramas and action films, which made his appearance all the more entertaining.
Valeria Golino plays Ramada Thompson, the psychologist who becomes the main character's love interest. She plays the role with enough charm and confidence, while also participating fully in the comedic situations.
Lloyd Bridges is a real treat to watch as Admiral Benson. His character is a constant source of absurd lines and ridiculous actions, and Bridges demonstrates the magnificent comedic talent he had already shown in "„Is there a pilot on the plane?“.
Cary Elwes appears as Kent Gregory, Topper's arrogant rival who embodies every cliché of the narcissistic war hero. His rivalry with the title character is one of the main driving forces of the story.
Other memorable participants include: Kevin Dunn, Jon Cryer and Bill Irwin, who contribute to the rich gallery of eccentric characters.
Visually, the film very successfully imitates the style of the great military action films of its time. The flights, training and dramatic scenes are filmed as if the viewer is watching a real blockbuster, which makes the comedic elements even more effective. It is the serious approach to the absurd material that is one of the main reasons why the humor works so well.
What's particularly impressive is the script's ability to combine different types of comedy. In addition to parodies of specific films, there are verbal puns, visual jokes, physical comedy, and even surreal moments that have no logical explanation. The film is not interested in realism - its only goal is to make the viewer laugh.
After his exit "„Smotanyaczi“" became a major international success and quickly earned the status of a modern comedy classic. Its popularity led to the creation of the sequel "Hot Shots! Part Deux" in 1993, which further developed the absurdist style of the original.
„Smotanyaczi“" remains an example of a parody comedy made with an exceptional sense of rhythm and love for cinema. This is a film that does not simply mock popular action films, but manages to create its own comedic identity. Thanks to the charismatic Charlie Sheen, a magnificent ensemble of actors and a non-stop stream of jokes, the production continues to be one of the funniest comedies of its generation.
