Firebreak (2026)

Firebreak (orig. title: Firefighter) is a 2026 Spanish drama thriller film directed by David Victory from a screenplay by Javier Echanis, Asier Guerrilla Echebarria, John Iriarte and David Victory. The film premiered on the Netflix movie platform on February 20, 2026.

The movie "„Firebreak“" combines family drama, mystery, and suspense, set against the backdrop of a raging forest fire - a natural element that becomes a metaphor for the characters' inner chaos.

The story begins with recently widowed Mara, who, along with her daughter, sister, brother-in-law and nephew, goes to the family house in the woods to prepare it for sale after a great loss. What begins as an attempt to close a painful chapter in their lives quickly turns into a nightmare. Little Lide disappears into the woods just as a massive forest fire breaks out in the area.

From here on, the film becomes a tense race against time. As the fire spreads and the situation becomes increasingly dangerous, the family begins a desperate search. Panic, fear, and a sense of helplessness gradually escalate, leading to suspicions directed at a local forest ranger, who turns out to be the last person to see the child.

The plot is not just a story of disappearance, but an exploration of how fear can distort judgment and lead to extreme decisions. The tension builds not only from the external threat (the fire) but also from the internal breakdown of trust between people.

David Victory builds the film with a focus on tension and emotional escalation. He uses the natural environment – the dense forest and the approaching fire – as an active dramatic element that enhances the feeling of claustrophobia and inevitability. The camera often follows the characters closely, which enhances the panic and chaos. Rather than relying on spectacular effects, the direction relies on psychological tension and moral conflicts.

Belen Cuesta in the role of Mara, she carries the emotional center of the film – her performance convincingly conveys the desperation and determination of a mother facing her greatest fear.
Joaquin Furiel as Louis builds a tense and impulsive image that contributes to the escalation of the conflict.
Diana Gomez In the role of Elena, she brings a more rational perspective, contrasting with the chaos around her.
Enric Auker as Santi – the forest officer – is a key figure in the story, whose ambiguity maintains the tension until the very end.
The cast works strongly as a team, with the main emphasis on the characters' emotional reactions under pressure.

„Firebreak is a tense and dark thriller that uses a simple but effective idea to explore complex human reactions. It is a film about fear, guilt and the hasty decisions that people make in crisis situations. Although it does not offer a revolutionary plot, it manages to hold the attention through atmosphere and strong emotional conflicts. It is suitable for viewers who like psychological thrillers with slowly building tension and moral dilemmas.
