Hold the Dark (2018)

Rights holder / Distributor: Netflix

Hold the Dark is a 2018 American neo-Western action thriller film directed by Jeremy Saulnier from a screenplay by Macon Blair. It was released in the United States on September 28, 2018. The film is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by William Giraldi.

The story takes writer and wolf expert Russell Kor to a remote Alaskan village, where he is called to investigate the disappearance of a young boy. The locals believe wolves are responsible for the incident, but Kor gradually realizes that something much darker lies behind the mystery. The return of the boy's father, veteran Vernon Sloan, further changes the situation and turns the story into a violent spiral of violence and revenge.

Jeremy Saulnier uses the rugged Alaskan landscape not just as a backdrop, but as an important part of the atmosphere. After Blue Ruin and Green Room The director once again shows interest in characters placed in extreme situations, but here the pace is slower and the mystery takes a greater place. The cold colors, the emptiness and the sudden outbursts of cruelty create a feeling of constant threat, without the film explaining everything to the viewer.

Jeffrey Wright is convincing as the reserved and observant Russell Corr, who tries to understand a world in which logic is gradually losing its meaning. Alexander Skarsgard is almost unrecognizable as Vernon Sloan and builds a physically threatening presence while Riley Keough gives Medora Sloane the necessary mystery. James Badge Dale also stands out in the role of Police Chief Donald Mariam, who finds himself drawn into the chaos.

Hold the Dark is a dark and unusual thriller that relies more on atmosphere, suspense, and the unspoken than on easy explanations. The film will not appeal to everyone, especially viewers expecting a traditional mystery with a clear-cut solution. For fans of grittier, darker films, however, Saulnier's work offers a memorable blend of wildness, violence, and a sense of human cruelty.
