Her Private Hell (2026)

Her Private Hell is a 2026 Danish-American crime fantasy thriller film directed by Nicolas Winding Refn from a screenplay by Esti Giordani and Nicolas Winding Refn. The film is set to be released in the United States on July 24, 2026.

The movie "„Her Private Hell“" marks director Nicolas Winding Refn's return to feature-length cinema almost ten years after "„The Neon Demon“" (2016). The production was presented at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival and immediately attracted attention with its surreal style, neon vision and unusual structure. The story mixes psychological horror, hallucinations, criminal mystery and dreams in Refn's typical hypnotic and visually aggressive style.

The film follows Elle, a young woman who arrives at a vast and nearly empty hotel in a dark, futuristic version of a large city shrouded in a strange fog. Rumors swirl among the residents about a mysterious killer known as the "Leather Man." Gradually, the story begins to shift between different timelines, realities, and psychological states. Part of the action is set in post-war Japan, where an American soldier desperately searches for his kidnapped daughter. The film deliberately blurs the lines between reality, dream, cinema, and hallucination. Instead of a clear explanation, the story builds a sense of anxiety, loss, and confused consciousness.

Nicolas Winding Refn uses his well-known visual style - rich neon colors, a slow pace and an almost hypnotic atmosphere. The film resembles a nightmare dream more than a traditional thriller. The direction places a strong emphasis on visual sensation and emotion, rather than on the logical development of the plot. The camera often lingers on characters and spaces for a long time, creating a sense of emptiness and inner anxiety. Although the film contains violence and sexual tension, it is more melancholic and restrained than some of Refn's earlier works. Instead of shocking scenes, a feeling of sadness, loneliness and psychological disintegration dominates here.

Sophie Thatcher plays the lead role of Elle and builds a character who constantly moves between fear, confusion and inner emptiness. Her presence is key to the atmosphere of the film.
Charles Melton plays an American soldier searching for his daughter in post-war Japan. His character gives the story a more tragic and human edge.
Christine Froseth, Havana Rose Liu and Diego Calva participate in the mysterious and often ambiguous relationships between the characters in the hotel, and Dougray Scott brings an unsettling and almost ghostly presence to one of the supporting roles.
Other participants include: Shioli Kutzuna, Hidetoshi Nishijima, Parker Sawyers, Aoi Yamada and Jason Handil-Forsell.

„Her Private Hell“" is a surreal and visually impactful psychological horror that places atmosphere and feeling above traditional plot. The film's strongest point is its hypnotic visual identity and the way it mixes dreams, fears and internal traumas into a nightmarish cinematic fantasy. This is not a film for viewers looking for clear answers or a classic thriller. The production is more of an emotional and visual experience - a dark, confusing and powerful auteur work in the style of Nicolas Winding Refn.
