Ghost Train (2024)

Ghost Train is a 2024 South Korean horror-mystery film directed by Se-won Tak from a screenplay by Jo Ba-reun. The film is set to be released in South Korea on July 9, 2025.

Ghost Train is a South Korean horror-thriller that combines urban legend, psychological suspense, and the social sensibility typical of contemporary Korean cinema. The film uses the well-known "ghost train" motif, but reframes it through a modern, urban setting, where fear comes not only from the supernatural, but also from the traumas that people carry within themselves.

The story revolves around a young woman who stumbles upon a mysterious story about a night train that appears on empty subway lines. Rumor has it that this train is not on the timetable, and those who board it experience something that changes their lives forever.

Her curiosity gradually turns into an obsession. She begins to research archives, old news reports, and eyewitness accounts of seeing a driverless train running at unusual hours. The closer she gets to the truth, the more blurred the line between reality and hallucination becomes.

The film builds tension through gradual build-up – empty platforms, flickering lights, distant noise from the tracks. The story doesn’t rely solely on startling moments, but on a sense of inevitability. At its core is the question of whether the „ghost train“ is a real phenomenon or a projection of guilt, fear and unhealed memories.

Director Tak Se-wong builds the film with attention to detail and atmosphere. The camera often remains still, allowing the viewer to gaze into the empty space and discover the threat for themselves. The dark tunnels and sterile stations create a contrast between modernity and the primal fear of the unknown. The pace is measured, with the tension building gradually, without unnecessary exposition. The music is minimalist, and the silence often proves more frightening than any sound.

Starring in the lead role Ju Hyun-young, who builds a convincing image of a young woman torn between rational explanation and irrational fear. Her performance is restrained but emotionally charged.

Jeon Bae-soo brings weight and mystery to a supporting role tied to the legend's past. Choi Bo-min contributes a fresh but tense presence that balances the main dramatic line. The cast works in sync, avoiding excessive expressiveness and relying on internal tension and realistic reaction.

Ghost Train is an atmospheric horror film that uses a familiar urban legend as a vehicle for exploring the human psyche. The film impresses with its visual discipline, gradual build-up of fear, and focus on psychological uncertainty. This is not your typical horror film with constant scares, but rather a slow, hypnotic tale of fear of the unknown that stays with the viewer long after the final shots.
