Dolly (2025)

Dolly is a 2025 American horror film directed by Rod Blackhurst from a screenplay by Rod Blackhurst and Brandon Weavell. The film is set for a US release on March 6, 2026.

Dolly is an independent horror film that from the first minutes impresses with a deeply disturbing concept and a visual style reminiscent of classic horror films from the 70s and 80s. It is a work that is distinguished by its harshness and psychological tension, using a minimalist structure to place the viewer in a constant sense of discomfort and tension.

The story follows Macy, a young woman whose life is turned upside down when she is kidnapped by a strange, monstrous creature known as Dolly. But the film doesn’t rely on the usual „killer in the woods“ formula. Dolly isn’t just interested in his physical superiority; his goal is to turn Macy into his „child,“ creating a twisted and terrifying bond between victim and creature.

The kidnapping marks the beginning of a psychological and physical struggle for survival, in which fear comes not only from the immediate danger, but also from the feeling of complete loss of control over one's own life. The plot skillfully explores themes such as the distorted understanding of family and the impossibility of escaping fate, placing the heroine in situations where every decision has a high price.

Rod Blackhurst uses a raw, almost grindhouse style. The 16mm film gives the film a grainy and haunting texture that enhances the sense of claustrophobia and tension. The camera often stays close to Macy, observing every fear, every panic reaction, and every small change in her behavior. This makes the film an almost physical experience for the viewer, where discomfort and anxiety are constant companions.

Fabian Therese carries almost the entire film on her shoulders with a convincing and powerful performance. She manages to convey Macy's vulnerability, as well as her survival instinct, without unnecessary dramatization. Max the Impaler in the role of Dolly presents the creature as an almost silent but extremely powerful character, whose physical menace and psychological intensity remain long in the viewer's mind. The supporting roles of Russ Tiller, Michalina Skorcelli and Ethan Supley complement the atmosphere, reinforcing the sense of reality in a distorted and horrific world. The unexpected participation of Sean William Scott it adds contrast and slightly relieves tension without disturbing the overall atmosphere of anxiety.

Dolly is a bold film that doesn't try to be easy to digest. It's a horror film that feels brutal and disturbing, yet intelligent and provocative. Its stark visuals and careful tension-building set it apart from standard genre offerings. The film is suitable for viewers who seek an intense emotional experience and appreciate psychologically and visually thoughtful horror that leaves a lasting impression.
