New Cinema "Paradise" (1988)

Cinema Paradiso

New cinema "Paradise"„ (Cinema Paradiso; orig. title: New Cinema Paradiso(Italian: ) is a 1988 Italian drama film directed by Giuseppe Tornatore from a screenplay by Giuseppe Tornatore and Vanna Paoli. The film premiered in Italy on 17 November 1988.

The film is a tribute to cinema, to childhood, to memory, and to the power that a simple movie theater screening has to shape destiny.

When successful director Salvatore "Toto" Di Vita learns of the death of his old projectionist Alfredo, he returns to his native Sicilian village. This plunges him into memories - of his childhood, of his first love, of the magic of cinema, and of the man who inspired this passion in him. Toto's childhood, spent between school, his mother, the cinema, and fairy tales, shapes not only a dream of cinema, but also hardships: loss, censorship, disappointment. Alfredo is not just a teacher - he is a father figure, a guide in the darkroom of the projection booth, and a keeper of hidden film moments (for example, "snippets" of scenes that the censor removes).

The film is divided into temporal layers—Toto's early life, adulthood, and the moment when he must choose between past and present. There is no "just for fun" line—every scene is woven with emotion, nostalgia, loss, and hope.

Giuseppe Tornatore uses Sicily as a landscape that is both beautiful and harsh, both searching and loving. Cinematographer Blasco Giurato creates shots of deserted squares, of a sunset over the sea, of the smoky light of the screening room - all of which bring depth and a sense of magic. The music by Ennio Morricone (in collaboration with his son Andrea) is an integral part of the film - its themes are tender, full of longing, with a warm melancholy.

New cinema "Paradise"„ is a film-gift for all cinema lovers. It is a film that talks about what it means to love – not just another person, but the idea of cinema, of memory and of what shapes you. A film that revolves around how important it is to believe in what you see, what you listen to, what you keep. If you like films that are not in a hurry to give decisions, but prefer to speak in the language of silence, of light and of the heart — New cinema "Paradise"„ is among the best.
