„Buddy“" is an American horror film with elements of black comedy, directed by Casper Kelly, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Jamie King. The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 22, 2026., and is released in theaters in the US on August 28, 2026. Distributed by Roadside Attractions and Saban Films, the 95-minute production uses the seemingly innocent world of children's television shows as the basis for an unusual and rather dark horror.
The story begins on the fictional children's show "It's Buddy!", where a group of children spend their time singing, dancing and having fun adventures with Buddy - a giant orange unicorn who constantly preaches happiness and positive behavior. The problems begin when one of the children refuses to obey Buddy's rules. Behind the bright and seemingly harmless facade, something far more sinister gradually emerges - Buddy doesn't just want the children to be happy, he insists that they obey his rules.
At the center of the story is Delaney Quinn as Freddie – a brave girl who gradually understands the true nature of the world she has found herself in. Freddie does not accept Buddy's rules and begins to look for a way to escape with the other children. In parallel with the children's story, the storyline of Grace, played by Christine Milioti – a mother who is haunted by the traumatic memory of her child's disappearance and gradually finds herself connected to Buddy's mysterious world.
Keegan-Michael Key voices Buddy and his sinister alter ego Dark Buddy. The contrast between the friendly, cheerful voice and the character's gradually revealed cruelty is one of the most interesting elements of the film. Sergey Zhuravsky physically fulfills the role of Buddy, allowing the character to function both as a comedic television mascot and a fearsome figure.
Among the other actors are Topher Grace like Ben, Michael Shannon like Willie, Patton Oswalt like the voice of Strappy, Madison Skye Pollan like Hannah, Luke Speakman like Josh, Phuong Kubaki like Sister Nancy and Clint Howard as George. The cast contributes to the unusual combination of Grace's realistic story and the absurd world of the television show.
The direction of Casper Kelly uses the nostalgia for children's television programs from the 80s and 90s, but turns it completely on its head. The bright sets, the songs, the smiles and the exaggerated positivity gradually begin to seem threatening. It is this contrast between childhood innocence and violence that makes "„Buddy“" into a different representative of contemporary horror. Kelly, known for his work on the cult satirical production "„Too Many Cooks“", turns television aesthetics into a kind of nightmare.
One of the film's greatest strengths is its satire. "„Buddy“" is not limited to the idea of an evil television mascot, but uses the world of children's shows to question the obsession with constant happiness, positive thinking and the need for children to always be obedient. Buddy is scary precisely because behind his cheerful demeanor lies an absolute intolerance for disobedience.
Visually, the production relies on a bright, almost sugary aesthetic that gradually becomes something disturbing. The sets and characters look like they’re straight out of a children’s program, but gradually gory and surreal elements appear. This approach allows the film to create a specific atmosphere in which the viewer is never quite sure whether the next scene will be comical, bizarre, or downright terrifying.
„Buddy“" received a good reception from critics around its festival premiere. Rotten Tomatoes reports 86% positive reviews from critics, with the film's inventive approach, dark humor, and ability to turn familiar elements of children's television into something sinister often highlighted. However, some reviews noted that the film did not always fully develop the potential of its unusual concept.
„Buddy“" is an unusual horror film that turns the lovable television mascot into a source of fear and uses children's television as a basis for dark satire. The strong presence of Christine Milioti, Delaney Quinn and Keegan-Michael Key, the unusual visual concept and the combination of humor and violence make the film an interesting genre proposition. For viewers who like the so-called "mascot horror" and stories that turn innocent elements of childhood into something disturbing, "„Buddy“" is one of the more original titles of 2026.
