„Argo“ (Argo) is a 2012 American historical thriller film directed by Ben Affleck according to the scenario of Chris Theriot. The film is based on the memoir "The Master of Disguise" by Antonio Mendes and the article "The Great Escape" by Joshua Bearman, about the real-life rescue operation during the Iran hostage crisis. It had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival on August 31, 2012, and its U.S. theatrical release was on October 12.

The story begins in 1979, when the American embassy in Tehran is taken over and six employees manage to escape, finding refuge in the home of Canadian ambassador Ken Taylor. To get them out of Iran, CIA agent Tony Mendez comes up with a highly unusual plan: the six pose as the crew of a fictional science fiction film preparing to shoot in the country. From this unlikely premise, the film builds a tense tale of espionage, deception, and survival.

Plot

Tony Mendes must create a convincing legend that will withstand the scrutiny of Iranian authorities. To do this, he turns to Hollywood producer Lester Siegel and makeup artist John Chambers, who create the fictitious production "Argo." Meanwhile, the six Americans must learn their fictional professions and the story of the film well enough to pass through the checks without arousing suspicion.

The tension gradually builds as any mistake could lead to their true identities being revealed. In the final part, the story becomes a race against time as the group must get through the airport and leave the country. Although the film is based on true events, some of the most tense moments are dramatized for the cinema, including the chase at the airport, which in reality did not happen that way.

Directing

After "„A sacrifice of salvation“" and "„The city“ Ben Affleck continues to develop his interest in crime and suspense stories, but with "Argo" he moves to real historical events. The direction gradually increases the tension without constantly relying on action, and a large part of the effect comes from the feeling that the characters are placed in a situation in which a small mistake can have serious consequences. The visual atmosphere convincingly recreates the late 70s and early 80s.

The contrast between the dark world of Tehran and the absurd Hollywood fiction created for cover works particularly well. In "„Argo“"The director uses cinema as part of the plot itself, and the scenes in Hollywood bring dark humor and temporarily relieve tension. This is a natural development after the previous two movies of Affleck as a director, but here the scale and historical context are significantly larger.

Acting

Ben Affleck plays the lead role of Tony Mendez and plays the character with relative restraint, allowing the focus to remain on the operation itself. Bryan Cranston as Jack O'Donnell lends the necessary weight to the CIA scenes, while Alan Arkin and John Goodman are the source of much of the humor in Hollywood's line. Arkin received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Among the other actors, the following stand out: Victor Garber, Tate Donovan, Clea DuVal, Scoot McNary, Rory Cochrane, Christopher Denham, Kerry Byshe and Kyle Chandler. The six diplomats are presented as individuals, rather than just an anonymous group, which helps the viewer feel the risk they are taking. The combination of serious acting and more comedic performances by Arkin and Goodman maintains a good balance in the narrative.

Conclusion

„Argo“" is a tense historical thriller that transforms a seemingly incredible intelligence operation into an accessible and dynamic cinematic story. The film manages to combine spy intrigue, historical drama, and dark humor without losing its focus on the six Americans whose survival depends on the success of the operation. It is the gradual buildup of tension that makes the last part the strongest segment of the production.

However, it is important to keep in mind that "„Argo“" uses artistic devices and changes some real events to enhance the dramatic effect. The film itself notes the involvement of the Canadian embassy, but historical sources emphasize the significant role of the Canadian side in the hiding and removal of the six Americans. The production received seven Oscar nominations and won the awards for Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay and Editing.
