„Clayface“ (Clayface) is an American horror thriller film with elements of psychological horror and superhero cinema, based on the DC Comics character of the same name. It is directed by James Watkins, and the script was written by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, based on the idea of Mike Flanagan. The film is part of the new DC Studios film universe – Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, but instead of traditional superhero action, it offers a dark story inspired by classic body horror films. The production is scheduled for a premiere on October 23, 2026.
The story follows Matt Hagen, a young and promising Gotham actor whose career is ruined after his face is brutally disfigured in an attack. In a desperate attempt to restore his appearance, he turns to Dr. Caitlin Bates, a talented but controversial scientist developing an experimental regeneration technology. The procedure initially seems successful, but soon Matt's body begins to undergo terrifying changes, transforming him into an unstable, shape-shifting being. As he loses control of his own identity, he is forced to confront the people who destroyed his life and the monster he is becoming.
In the lead role Tom Rhys Harris is reincarnated as Matt Hagen – a tragic hero whose thirst for a second chance leads him to ruin. Naomi Aki plays Dr. Caitlin Bates, the scientist who created the revolutionary technology, and Max Minghella is Detective John Perlman of the Gotham City Police Department, who investigates the series of strange incidents. The cast also includes Eddie Marsan, David Denchik, Nancy Carroll and Joshua James.
After his successes with "„Paradise Lake“, „The Woman in Black“" and the American remake of "„Speak No Evil“, James Watkins focuses on one of the most tragic figures in the Batman universe. Rather than relying on traditional superhero battles, the film focuses on the character's psychological breakdown, loss of identity, and obsession with physical perfection. The script of Mike Flanagan retains the author's characteristic focus on human drama, and the influence of classic works such as "„The fly“" is evident in the body horror and gradual disintegration of the main character.
With the first trailer "„Clayface“" attracted a lot of attention, as it showed a radically different approach to comic book adaptations. Instead of large-scale action, the shots rely on a chilling atmosphere, practical effects and painful scenes of physical transformation. First impressions define the film as one of the boldest and most unusual titles in the history of DC Studios, and many are already comparing it to the classics of the body horror genre.
„Clayface“" promises to be more than just another comic book villain story. Combining psychological horror, a tragic human story, and chilling visual transformations, the film has the potential to become one of the most original and memorable titles in the new DC film universe.
