Pokémon Legends ZA (2025)

Pokémon Legends: Z-A is the long-awaited sequel to the "legislative" Pokémon Legends: Arceus, created by Game Freak. It raises the bar both visually and gameplay-wise, and offers it completely in real time - moving from a role-playing adventure to a dynamic action-RPG format. The game takes place entirely in Lumiose City (Kalos region), which gives an urban and refreshing tone, different from the wild landscapes of the previous part.

Release date and platforms

Released October 16, 2025.

Platforms: Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 (the enhanced version for Switch 2 includes optimized graphics, resolution, and FPS).

Plot and world

The player takes on the role of a trainer who arrives in a revamped Lumiose City during an urban development project aimed at harmony between humans and Pokémon. The game completely abandons the remote wilds and focuses on this city that is both familiar and transforming.

The Legendary Pokémon Zygarde plays a central role in the story, and the quest involves participating in the "ZA Royale" ranked battles, where trainers climb from rank Z to A, with the promise of a wish coming true.

Gameplay and innovation

Real-time battle: Pokémon can move and strike directly, and actions are based on positioning, reaction, and timing.

Night attacks and battles: players can be the first to provoke a battle at night in certain areas ("Battle Zones"), and opponents' defense mechanisms also come into play - they can surprise you.

Mega Evolution: The mechanic returns for the first time in 7 years - Pokémon can achieve new powers and forms through Mega Stones and Key Stone synchronization, just like in X/Y.

Starting Pokémon selection: Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile (classics from Gold/Silver and Black/White respectively).

Strengths

Attractive visual style – the urban environment in focus, with details and animations suitable for a new generation (especially on Switch 2).

New mechanics and depth – a combination of real-time, ranked tournaments and Mega investment in tactics makes battles more than just an arcade clash.

A solid evolution from its predecessor – a well-balanced and fresh approach within the familiar Pokémon Legends framework that fans are fond of.

Notes

Limited location – the focus is only on Lumiose City, which may seem repetitive to fans of open worlds.

Ranked systems – „ZA Royale“ battles may not be to everyone’s taste unless they are looking for a Pokémon Champions-type PvP/tournament format.

–

Pokémon Legends: Z-A breaks the mold of the series with an urban action-RPG approach, complete with real-time battles, Mega Evolution, and ranked tournaments. The game offers a more mature and dynamic vision of Kalos, combining fresh mechanics with classic nostalgia. It is suitable for both veterans and new trainers looking for a more intense take on the traditional Pokémon formula.
