Compromise (Compromise) is a 2022 French drama thriller film directed by Jérôme Salle from a screenplay by Jérôme Salle and Caryl Ferey. The film is set to be released in France on 7 September 2022.
Compromise is a French political thriller film directed by Jérôme Salle, who also wrote the screenplay. The film is inspired by true events and tells the dramatic story of a Frenchman drawn into a dangerous intrigue in Russia by powerful state structures.
The main character is Mathieu Roussel, a diplomat and representative of the Alliance Française in Irkutsk, Siberia, who moves to Russia with his family in an attempt to change his life and support cultural exchange. His plans are drastically disrupted when local authorities suddenly arrest him and charge him with a serious crime - distributing child pornography and abusing his own daughter. It turns out that he is the victim of "kompromat" - false, deliberately created evidence, organized with the help of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB).
Left isolated, without support and unable to defend himself, Mathieu must make difficult decisions. With proving his innocence seemingly impossible, his only chance is to flee Russia, a vast territory where his pursuer is everywhere. With the support of some allies, he begins a risky escape through wintry and hostile territory, realizing that the campaign against him is being waged by forces far more powerful than he ever imagined.
Jerome Sall designed Compromise as a weighty political thriller with a realistic atmosphere, in which the tension comes not from fantastical twists, but from the helplessness of the individual against impersonal institutions. We see a dark, sometimes claustrophobic tone that emphasizes social conflicts, power games and alienation in the conditions of a foreign country. The film uses natural landscapes and a cold climate to enhance the feeling of isolation and despair - this is not just a political drama, but a story of survival, betrayal and psychological resilience.
Gilles Lellouche plays the role of Mathieu Roussel - a diplomat who gradually transforms from a confident professional into a desperate man fighting for freedom, while his face changes under the pressure of injustice.
Joanna Kulig is Svetlana, a woman who proves to be key in Mathieu's attempts to survive and find a way to escape, despite the dangers that haunt them.
Among the supporting roles, notable are Mikhail Gorevoy as Rostov – a senior FSB official, Alexey Gorbunov like the lawyer Borodin, Eliza Lasowski in the role of Alice (Mathieu's wife), as well as Daniil Vorobyov, Igor Zhizhikin и Mikhail Safronov, which complement the complex social and political context of the story.
Compromise is a highly emotional and tense dramatic film that explores themes of power, manipulation, and human resilience. Based on true events, the film shows us how easily a system can destroy the life of an honest person when it comes to political interests and power games.
Combining intelligent storytelling, strong acting, and a realistic style, Compromise remains one of the memorable European drama titles of the early 2020s.
