River is a 2026 American horror film combining elements of thriller and slasher film, directed by Joshua Giuliano, who also wrote the screenplay. Its world premiere will take place in September 2026 at the Toronto International Film Festival, in the Midnight Madness program. The story combines family drama with a tense chase in an isolated natural environment, where the chances of salvation gradually disappear.

After their father's death, three estranged siblings Lucy, Carla and Drew gather in their hometown to scatter his ashes at his favorite spot on a remote river. The boat trip is supposed to help them say goodbye to him, but also overcome the differences that have built up over the years. When the engine breaks down and they are stranded far from any help, a sinister masked figure appears on the shore and does not take his eyes off them. It soon becomes clear that the danger is much greater than they imagined, and the three must put aside their personal conflicts if they are to survive.

Joshua Giuliano uses the isolated space of the river to create a sense of helplessness and ever-increasing threat. The water, dense vegetation, and lack of phone signal turn the natural environment into a trap from which the characters have difficulty escaping. Along with the chase, the film emphasizes the tension between family members, whose old grievances are exacerbated at a time when they are forced to rely on each other. The director combines atmospheric shots, sudden bursts of violence, and prolonged moments of uncertainty, relying more on the sense of imminent danger than on complex explanations.

Jane Levy builds the image of Lucy as a woman forced to deal with both personal loss and a threat to her life. Jessica Roth brings emotional sharpness to the role of Carla, and Max Mattern complements the family dynamic as Drew. Dane Diliegro is particularly important for the dark atmosphere with his incarnation as the masked stalker, whose presence maintains the feeling of constant danger. The cast helps to keep the conflict from being reduced solely to a fight for survival, but also to maintain the human tension between the characters.

River is a good choice for fans of suspenseful horror films, in which the isolated setting and the relentless pursuer create a sense of constant threat. The plot uses familiar genre techniques, but adds a family drama that gives additional meaning to the struggle for survival. The strength of the story lies in the clash between personal disagreements and the need for the characters to act together when danger leaves them no time for hesitation. For viewers who like dark stories with chases, suspense and limited options for salvation, the film offers a promising genre experience.
