Grafted is a 2024 New Zealand horror film combining body horror, psychological thriller, and black comedy. It is directed by Sasha Rainbow, who co-wrote the script with Lee Murray, Mia Maramara и Huailing Ou. The world premiere is on August 9, 2024 at the New Zealand International Film Festival, and the story examines the painful desire for acceptance and the dangers of striving for a perfect appearance.

Wei is a talented Chinese student who arrives in New Zealand with the hope of continuing her late father's research. Due to a birthmark on her face, she has difficulty fitting in with her colleagues and is painfully aware of how people view her appearance. When she is offered the opportunity to work on an experimental skin grafting procedure, the young woman sees a chance to change her life and finally be accepted. However, the scientific experiment gradually takes on a terrifying character, and her desire for beauty and recognition leads her down a path from which it becomes increasingly difficult to return.

Sasha Rainbow builds the story as a clash between social insecurity, the pressure to conform to generally accepted standards of beauty, and the physical horror of changes in the human body. The film uses repulsive visual images and tense situations to emphasize how easily the desire for acceptance can turn into obsession. Along with the horror elements, there are also satirical moments aimed at superficial relationships and the cult of appearance. At times, the exaggerated approach pushes psychological depth into the background, but it is the uncompromising scenes that give the production its distinctive character.

Joyena Sun builds Wei's character through a combination of vulnerability, loneliness, and gradually growing determination, while Jess Hong presents Angela as a stark contrast to the withdrawn and insecure main character. Eden Hart complements the story with an important role in the development of the transformation, and Jared Turner brings additional tension to the character of Professor Paul. Xiao Hu и Sepi Toa also contribute to building the environment in which personal ambitions and relationships between characters gradually spiral out of control.

Grafted is a good choice for fans of unconventional horror films who are not afraid of shocking scenes and unpleasant bodily transformations. Beneath the surface of the bloody horror lies a story about the desperate desire to be liked and the destructive cost of trying to change yourself for the sake of other people's expectations. Although at times it relies more on extremes than nuance, the film offers a memorable combination of social satire, psychological suspense and body horror.
