„Air convoy“ („Con Air“") is an American action thriller film directed by Simon West according to the scenario of Scott Rosenberg. It premiered on June 2, 1997 in Las Vegas, and was released in theaters in the United States on June 6. The main roles are Nicolas Cage, John Cusack, John Malkovich, Ving Rhames, Colm Meaney и Steve Buscemi.

Cameron Poe is a former Ranger who is released from prison after years behind bars and boards a plane carrying dangerous prisoners. During the flight, criminals manage to take over the plane and the plan to transfer them turns into a real nightmare. Cameron must find a way to save the innocent people without revealing his identity to the other prisoners.

As the plane heads towards its pre-determined destination, Agent Vince Larkin tries from the ground to prevent a crash. Leading the rebellion is the charismatic and extremely dangerous Cyrus "The Virus" Grissom, who gradually turns the flight into his own game. The story combines tension, chases and dark humor, leaving little time for peace.

Simon West builds the film as a pure genre spectacle in which the action almost never stops. The plane becomes an enclosed space, allowing the director to constantly increase the tension, while parallel scenes on the ground expand the scale of the story. Aerial chases and spectacular crashes are among the strongest visual moments.

The direction is far from realism, and that's part of the production's charm. Like many 90s action films, "„Air convoy“" prefers spectacle over strict logic, but does so with sufficient confidence and energy. The pace remains fast, and the combination of tension and dark humor gives the film character.

Nicolas Cage is an ideal choice for the role of Cameron Poe, combining physical convincingness with his characteristic emotional expressiveness. John Cusack is more reserved like Vince Larkin and serves as a stable counterbalance to the chaos around him. Most memorable, however, is John Malkovich, which transforms Cyrus Grissom into an intelligent and dangerous villain with an unusual presence.

Ving Rhames, Colm Meaney, Mykelti Williamson и Steve Buscemi also contribute to the diverse cast of prisoners and supporting characters. Buscemi's brief but memorable appearance as Garland Greene is particularly impressive. The variety of characters is one of the reasons the film doesn't just become a series of action scenes.

„Air convoy“" is a typical representative of the great action films of the 90s - noisy, spectacular and completely dedicated to entertainment. The strong cast, memorable villains and large-scale stunts compensate for the plot implausibility. The film has its own style and does not try to be anything more than a well-made genre adventure.

Today, the production continues to be remembered as one of Nicolas Cage's iconic titles from this period. "„Air convoy“" is a good choice for viewers who like fast-paced chase films, charismatic villains, and lots of action. While it lacks any particular depth, it remains an extremely entertaining example of late 20th century Hollywood genre cinema.

Plot
