„Parallel Tales“" (original title Parallel stories) is a 2026 French-language drama film directed by world-renowned director Asghar Farhadi. The film made its world premiere in the main competition program of the Cannes Film Festival on May 14, 2026, before being released in theaters in France and the other co-producing territories (France, Belgium, and Italy). Since its festival debut, the film has been generating lively reactions due to its complex structure and the intertwining of reality and fiction.

The story takes place in contemporary Paris and follows Sylvie, a lonely, introverted writer who seeks inspiration for her new novel by observing her neighbors through her window. She begins to construct fictional plots in her mind based on their lives, and eventually hires a young man named Adam to help her with her daily life. Gradually, the line between reality and her fiction begins to blur, and the events she „creates“ as literature begin to affect the real lives of everyone around her. The film moves in the typical psychological register of Asghar Farhadi – moral ambivalence, tension in interpersonal relationships, and the gradual revelation of truths that no one wants to admit.

At the center of the cast is Isabelle Huppert, which builds a strong and multi-layered image of Sylvie – simultaneously controlling, vulnerable and obsessed with her own imagination. Next to her Virgins Efira in the role of Anna/Nita and Vincent Cassel like Pierre/Nicolas add extra tension and dramatic density. Pierre Ninet и Adam Bessa complement the main plot with characters who gradually find themselves drawn into the complex web of observation, interpretation and distorted reality. The appearance of Catherine Deneuve gives additional authority and a classic European cinema presence.

The strongest side of "„Parallel Tales“" is the way the film unravels the theme of authorship and the boundary between observation and creativity. The director builds a story in which sound, space and point of view are as important as the events themselves. Gradually, the viewer begins to question what is real and what is a product of the characters' imagination, and this tension underlies the entire film.

Critical reactions have been mixed but intense. Some reviewers praise the ambition, acting, and intellectual complexity of the narrative, while others find the structure pretentious and overly drawn out. However, almost all agree that the film is a typical example of Asghar Farhadi's late style - a morally tense cinema that avoids easy answers.

„Parallel Tales“" is a film about the stories we tell each other – and the danger of them taking on a life of their own. It is a complex, multi-layered drama that demands attention but rewards the viewer with rich psychological and emotional subtext.
