The swarm is a 2023 international science fiction thriller film directed by Barbara Eder, Luke Watson, and Philipp Stölzl from a screenplay by Stephen Lally, Marissa Lestrade, Chris Lunt, and Michael A. Walker. It will have its world premiere on February 19, 2023, at the Berlinale.

Inexplicable and dangerous phenomena related to the oceans begin to occur all over the world. Whales attack ships, deadly bacteria contaminate drinking water, and unusual organisms cause catastrophic waves. A group of international scientists gradually discovers a connection between these events and comes to the disturbing assumption that an unknown form of intelligent life exists in the depths of the sea. While authorities hesitate to accept their warnings, researchers head to the Arctic Ocean in an attempt to understand the nature of the threat.

The directing team builds a large-scale story in which scientific mystery is intertwined with environmental problems and the consequences of human intervention in nature. The eight episodes follow different parts of the world before gradually uniting the separate storylines. Visual effects and an international cast emphasize the scale of the danger, and the participation of marine scientists as consultants gives the story a scientific basis. The swarm is among the ambitious European series that turn the global ecological crisis into a tense fantasy adventure.

Alexander Karim plays marine biologist Sigurd Johansson, and Cecil de France is Dr. Cecile Roche, who studies deadly bacteria. Leonie Benes takes on the role of Charlie Wagner, the young marine biologist sent to a remote station in the Shetland Islands. Joshua Ojik is Leon Anahuac, a whale specialist, and Barbara Zukova played by Professor Katharina Lehmann. The international ensemble also includes Krista Kosonen, Takuya Kimura, Oliver Mazzucci, Claas Hoefer-Umlauf and Sharon Duncan-Brewster.

The swarm raises the question of whether humanity truly understands the world it is trying to control. The series combines science fiction, mystery, and environmental thriller, gradually transforming unusual phenomena into a threat to all of civilization. Although the many storylines can sometimes be distracting, the production impresses with its international scale and ambitious idea. For fans of science fiction films and series, this is an interesting look at the possible consequences of the disturbed balance between man and nature.
