The Abandons is a 2025 American Western drama television series created by Kurt Sutter. The film premiered on the Netflix movie platform on December 4, 2025.
Set in the 1850s in the Oregon Territory, Fiona Nolan, convinced of a "higher calling," adopts four orphans to start a family. The Van Ness family (of wealth) lays claim to land that Fiona has acquired, and the conflict between the two families grows - "a family of wealth" versus "a family of the abandoned." The theme is complicated by "two crimes, a secret, a forbidden love, and a piece of land that has silver under it." The conflict between wealth and morality, between power and survival, sets a dramatic foundation.
The series has a strong core of actors, including Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson – two actresses with a huge presence. The genre is a western with modern drama and complex social issues – a combination that can be very attractive. Created by Kurt Sutter („Sons of Anarchy“"), which suggests a well-developed world and conflicts.
