Shifting Gears (2025 – )

Shifting Gears is a 2025 American comedy-drama film created by Julie Tucker-Scully and Mike Scully. The film premiered on the Hulu movie platform on January 8, 2025.

The main character is Matt Parker (Tim Allen) — a widower who runs a classic car restoration shop. His life is orderly, but he is lonely and withdrawn in his everyday life.

Everything turns upside down when his estranged daughter Riley (Kat Dennings), along with her two children — in search of a new start after her divorce.

Matt is forced to accept a new, chaotic and emotional reality: a home, a full house, children, new relationships and family conflicts. The relocation of his daughter and grandchildren is not just physical - it is a restoration of family relationships, attempts at reconciliation, adaptation, differences in views and a second chance at "family".

The series explores these human themes—the loss of a father, divorce, grandchildren, generational differences—with humor and warmth, presenting life's challenges as a chance to re-order something you thought was "broken.".

„Shifting Gears“" is not an absurd sitcom with black humor or sharp satire; rather, it strives for a warm, relatable tone — laughter, family situations, character clashes, but also human kindness.

Car restoration is a metaphor for the restoration of relationships: the need for patience, skill, compromise, care. This gives the series character — not just "you laugh - you forget", but "you see a life that can be complicated, but human".

A pace that fits everyday life — without over-dramatization, without over-exposed conflicts; stories you can recognize, sometimes funny, sometimes touching, often real.

Shifting Gears is not a revolutionary series — it does not aim to shake things up, but to offer comfort, compromises, human mistakes and second chances. For me, this is a good, slightly nostalgic, sincere family comedy that does its job: it makes you laugh, reminds you that family is important and that restoration — be it of cars or relationships — sometimes starts with understanding and a little patience.
