Jujutsu Kaisen (2020 – )

Rights holder / Distributor: MAPPA / Crunchyroll

„Jujutsu Kaisen“" is a Japanese anime series in the fantasy, action, and horror genres, based on the manga of the same name by Gege Akutami. The manga series began in 2018, and the television adaptation began in October 2020 by studio MAP. As of 2026, the series includes three seasons, the prequel "„Jujutsu Kaisen 0“" and continues with a fourth season. The third season, "„The Culling Game: Part 1“", airs from January to March 2026.

Plot

The story follows Yuji Itadori, an ordinary high school student with extraordinary physical strength who spends his time in the school's occult club. His life changes when his classmates encounter a cursed object - the finger of the ancient curse Ryomen Sukuna.

In an attempt to save his friends, Yuji swallows the object and becomes a vessel for Sukuna. Instead of being killed immediately, he is drawn into the world of jujutsu sorcerers, where curses are born from negative human emotions. His task is to find and consume the remaining parts of Sukuna's body before he is eventually executed.

A group of different characters gradually forms around Yuji – Megumi Fushiguro, Nobara Kugisaki and their teacher Satoru Gojo. Each of them has their own understanding of life, death and responsibility. Gradually, the story goes beyond the usual wizard school and turns into a large-scale battle between people, curses and forces that are trying to change the very nature of the world.

Directing

One of the strongest sides of "„Jujutsu Kaisen“" is the visual performance. The first season was directed by Sunhoo Park, and the scenario structure is entrusted to Hiroshi Seko. Studio MAP creates dynamic animation that allows the fight scenes to look both spectacular and understandable. The official series data states MAP as an animation studio, and the music is by Hiroaki Tsutsumi, Yoshimasa Terui and Alice Okehazama.

The series manages to combine traditional Japanese mythology with a modern urban setting. The curses are not just monsters that need to be defeated, but a kind of reflection of human fears, hatred and negative emotions. This gives the story a darker tone and allows the authors to raise questions about death and the value of human life.

The battle scenes are particularly impressive. They don't rely solely on physical strength, but on a complex system of cursed energy, techniques, and territorial expansion. Thus, each battle becomes a kind of strategic game in which the characters must understand their opponent's abilities.

Acting

Even though it's an animated series, the voice performances are an extremely important part of the impact. Junya Enoki builds Yuji as a character who combines optimism, a sense of humor, and a gradually growing sense of responsibility. His interpretation allows the viewer to feel the change in the character without him losing his original humanity.

Yuma Uchiwa gives Megumi a more reserved and serious character, while Asaami Seto builds Nobara as a confident and independent heroine. Yuichi Nakamura becomes one of the series' most memorable voices as Satoru Gojo, a character who combines immense strength, self-confidence, and an almost childlike penchant for pranks.

It is also particularly important Jun'ichi Suwabe as Ryomen Sukuna. His voice gives the character the necessary sense of power and danger. The official cast also includes many established Japanese actors, including Kenjiro Tsuda, Megumi Ogata, Takao Koyama, Mamoru Miyano and others.

Conclusion

„Jujutsu Kaisen has established itself as one of the most impressive modern anime series thanks to its combination of strong characters, dark atmosphere, complex mythology, and exceptionally high-quality animation. The series begins as a relatively traditional story about students who are trained to fight monsters, but gradually develops into a much more serious story about death, sacrifice, guilt, and the meaning of human life.

Its greatest strength is that it doesn't fear consequences. The characters aren't protected by the script just because they're popular, and their losses have a real impact on the story. This gives the series an unpredictability that's missing from many other titles in the genre.

At the same time "„Jujutsu Kaisen“" doesn't become a consistently bleak experience. The humor, friendship, and charismatic characters provide the necessary balance, and the relationships between the characters are just as important as the battles themselves.

For fans of anime, fantasy and supernatural films and series "„Jujutsu Kaisen“" is one of those titles that is hard to miss. Its huge success is not only due to the impressive animation - behind the spectacle is a well-built universe, in which almost every character has their own motivation and place in the larger story.

The series continues into 2026, when the third season introduces "The Culling Game: Part 1," and MAP has already confirmed work on a fourth season. This shows that the story still has a significant way to go and "„Jujutsu Kaisen“" will likely remain among the leading contemporary anime series for a long time to come.
