Disclaimer is a 2024 American drama mystery thriller film series created by Alfonso Cuarón. The film premiered on the Apple TV+ movie platform on October 10, 2024.
Disclaimer is a seven-part psychological drama-erotic thriller created, directed and written by Nobel Prize-winning director Alfonso Cuarón, based on the novel by Renee Knight. The series tenses the viewer with a graceful, yet sometimes suffocating visual style and explores the complexities of human relationships, truth and guilt.
The central figure is Catherine Ravenscroft (Cate Blanchett), a famous journalist who receives a novel in the mail. The title – The Perfect Stranger – finds herself immersed in her past, revealing an intimate story from Italy twenty years ago. This book forces her to confront her husband, the tearful former teacher Stephen Brigstock (Kevin Klein), broken by the loss of his son and embittered by Katerina's secrets.
The narrative is inconsistent, shifting between the past (Italy, 2001) and the present (London) using parallel perspectives. Cuarón plays with notions of credibility, especially through an „unreliable narrator,“ and cinematographers Emmanuel Lubezki and Bruno Delbonnel bring magnetism to every scene.
Disclaimer is visually and conceptually challenging, but it doesn't always resonate emotionally. This is a work for the viewer who appreciates style, artificial ambiguity, and slow psychological intrigue. For fans of Cuarón and Blanchett – a definite must-see. For others – it's occasionally difficult to stay involved until the end.
