Dark (2017 – 2020)

Dark is a 2017 German crime fantasy thriller series created by Baran bo Odar and Jante Friese. The film premiered on Netflix on December 1, 2017.

The series became Netflix's first major international success from Germany. It premiered in 2017, and by the time it ended in 2020, the series was recognized as one of the most intelligent and emotionally profound series in the history of television. It was compared to another Netflix film series - "„Strange things“" (Stranger Things).

At first glance "„Dark“" is the story of a missing child in a small German town. But very soon the viewer realizes that this is not just a crime mystery, but an epic about time, fate and human guilt, spanning generations.

Set in the fictional town of Winden, two children disappear under mysterious circumstances. The locals are shocked—but for some, it stirs up old wounds because something like this has happened before…

Four families – the Nielsens, the Dopplers, the Tiedemanns and the Kahnwalds – find themselves connected in an incomprehensible way. It is soon revealed that there is a secret tunnel under the nuclear power plant in Winden, which is a portal through time that opens every 33 years.

The main character, Jonas Kanvald, the son of a man who committed suicide, begins to investigate the truth behind the disappearances and discovers that he himself is part of an eternal cycle of events that repeats itself in different eras — 1953, 1986, 2019, and even beyond.

So "„Dark“" gradually becomes a story about the paradoxes of time and the impossibility of man escaping his fate.

Baron bo Odar and Jante Friese build a world steeped in melancholy, philosophy, and precise realism. Each frame is carefully composed—fog, forests, concrete, electrical noise—the atmosphere is heavy, hypnotic, and oppressively beautiful.

The color palette is cold and symbolic—Jonas's yellow jacket is the only glimmer of human hope amidst the endless grayness.

Ben Frost's music is a masterpiece in itself — industrial, mystical, with pulsating sounds that echo like time itself.

„Dark“" is distinguished by a mathematical precision in its structure — every detail, every object, every name has meaning. It is a series that demands full attention and rewards the viewer with the realization that everything is connected.

„Dark“" is a television masterpiece that transforms science fiction into a metaphor for human existence. This is a series that is not just watched - it is experienced, analyzed and felt like a dream from which you cannot wake up.

Its ending is tragic and beautiful — it shows that sometimes the only way to save the world is to let it disappear.

„Dark“" is a poetry of time, pain and love, wrapped in mystery. A work that proves that television can be philosophy in motion.
